Imagine having eight years of gathered data on insect damage in willow stands, all aimed at unravelling the complexities of plant heterogeneity's impact. Join me as I for the first time unveil the findings from this study and invite you to help decide if it is worth to continue the data collection for more years. ‘Citizen science’ is an umbrella term for increasingly popular forms of research where the research process and its outcomes are dependent on contributions from volunteers, meaning that the roles of ‘researcher’ and ‘research subject’ are blurred. This raises specific issues of research ethics, for instance concerning responsibility, credit, and authorship, and it might also have legal repercussions, such as in the context of ethical review or copyright. This presentation gives an overview of these issues, pointing out some pitfalls and potential solutions.
