The aim of my PhD is to create an interdisciplinary decision support tool for management of ditches in Swedish forest land.
Sweden has one million kilometres of ditches. Not all are desired either because they are not functional (due to poor planning or climate change) or economic and environmental priorities have shifted. The decision support tool will help managers decide what path is best for their site and goals: maintain (ditch clean), restore, or leave alone (passive restoration).
The tool will incorporate data on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, hydrology, and more, based on studies conducted in Trollberget and the Krycklan catchment. Findings will be upscaled to the national level using Sweden-wide open data.
