Various environmental impacts from Swedish feed compounds

Published: 22 November 2010

A transition to domestically produced compound feed for dairy cows can produce positive environmental effects. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), effects on energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, eutrophication, acidification and land needs for various Swedish-grown feed was calculated.

None of the tested feed mixtures was better from all aspects than the "normal feed" containing imported soybean. The environmental impact from the production of the fodders varies much more than the differences in emissions from the animals eating different fodder. With regard to energy consumption, fertilizer use means significantly more than transportation.
