New methods for weed control in organic fruit growing

Published: 23 April 2012

The so-called Sandwich system gave as good growth results as entirely open ground. The system consists of a short cut grass strip under the apple trees combined with mechanical treatment outside the tree line.

In a recently completed research project, conducted by researchers at SLU, six different weed control strategies in organic orchards have been evaluated. The so-called Sandwich system, where a short cut grass strip under the apple trees were combined with mechanical treatment outside the tree line, gave as good growth results as an entirely open ground. The researchers also noted that fruit quality and storability were positively impacted by the Sandwich system.
