This report presents the results of a study into how media reporting about GMO in relation to food and agriculture changed in intensity and content in the period from 1994 up to and including 2017. The report thus aims to contribute some answers to how the Swedish media debate and wider public perception on GMO has changed over time and which factors that have impacted this change.
Genetically modified organisms (GMO) have long been a source of controversy and media attention. It is a topic most people know at least something about. While medical applications of biotechnology have generally been less controversial, over the years, GM food products have recieved significant, often negative public attention. This report is directed to students, researchers and policy makers with an interest in understanding Swedish public perception and media debate on GMO.
The report has been produced within the Mistra Biotech Research Programme.
