LivestockSense for sustainability of farm animals

LivestockSense is about improving the sustainability of pigs and poultry by facilitating the introduction of information technology technology. Christina Lundström from SLU RådNu is one of the researchers in the project, which runs from 2020 to 2022 and is funded by Formas.
Using information and communication technology-based tools in agriculture is crucial for the EU to become internationally competitive, socially inclusive and climate neutral by 2050, the objective set out in the EU Green Deal.
Although advanced ICT solutions improve the environmental and economic viability of livestock farming, the development of sustainable livestock farming still requires the removal of socio-economic and cultural barriers, preventing the further use of ICT tools.
Therefore, LivestockSense's main objective is to
- improve economic and environmental viability conditions for livestock farming through the application of advanced information and
Communication technologies
- identify/remove social barriers to the adoption of technologies to achieve a wider use of ICT on farms.
This will be achieved by selecting and supplying a number of farms in
five key geographical areas in Europe with tools for Precision Livestock Farming.
In summary, LivestockSense will be implemented to
- understand the reasons for the limited use of ICT tools,
- explore farmers' attitudes towards precision livestock farming systems,
- document the information needs of farmers,
- evaluate their knowledge of decision-making processes on information provided by ICT tools, and
- support farmers in adapting to Precision Livestock Farming through workshops, mentoring and a web-based
application with an open Application Programming Interface (API).
