Many landscape architects (and students from ling, LAM, LASU and HSU) work with landscape governance and landscape management on varying scales. Today the students on the Landscape Architect programme have only one course at BSc level called Landscape Management, where they become familiar with management theories and management strategies, combined with physical management exercises using an analytic and executive approach. Governance is not visible in the landscape architect programme’s curriculum today, neither at a BSc nor an MSc level.
The project aims to develop a Master’s level course that offers landscape students research and skills training in the field of the governance and management of the landscape. The aim of the project was to develop a course programme and investigate the possibility of introducing a specialization in the landscape architect programme with a focus on the governance and management of the landscape. The purpose of the project was to get an overview of the needs for such a course (compared to other courses, student groups, etc.), and develop ideas for the overall name and content.
The results show a great need to place more emphasis on governance in the Landscape Architecture programme, which is therefore a main target for the course. Dialogue-based planning and management are based on the flexibility that dialogue implies. Alternative forms of management probably need alternative forms of governance, and recently graduated landscape architects are expected to be comfortable working with this. Working landscape architects lack experience and training to coordinate, initiate, and run these kinds of processes .
The intention with the course Governance in Landscape Development (GiLD) is to prepare for having a decision in 2021 for the course to be part of a Master's programme, with a possible start of the course in 2023-2024.
There is a need to create a detailed timeline for the process leading up to this date. The theme group Landscape Governance and Management at LAPF should be responsible for the process in close collaboration with other programme coordinators within the institution.
