Thomas F. Randolph has been appointed honorary doctor of agricultural science by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at SLU.
Honorary doctor Thomas F. Randolph grew up in the US and studied agricultural economics at Cornell University (MSc in 1986 and doctoral degree in 1992).
He then began working for the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), first as a social science researcher in Senegal, then with policy issues on the Ivory Coast. In 1998, he started working at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) with issues concerning animal and human health connected to food-producing animals.
In 2011, he became the director of CGIAR's research programme Livestock and Fish. Since 2017, he is the director of the research programme for food-producing animals, CRP Livestock, at ILRI in Nairobi, Kenya.
Thomas Randolph has published a large number of high-quality scientific articles on the theme of animal disease in low-income countries. His contributions have often concerned the social and economic effects of these diseases.
He has significantly contributed to SLU's engagement as a full member of CRP Livestock, which has resulted in that SLU now has a unique position as the only academic partner in the programme.
SLU researchers active in the fields of animal health, genetics and feed have access to important resources within CRP Livestock. In addition, they can use the programme's network to further internationalise their research. Thanks to Thomas Randolph's efforts and personal commitment, SLU researchers who work with global animal issues now have a new professional arena.
