Björn Embrén has been appointed Honorary Doctor of Agricultural Sciences at the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science at SLU.

Björn Embrén is a consultant and former tree specialist for the City of Stockholm. He has developed a method for establishing planting beds based on macadam, biochar and compost, which has completely transformed how we build around these essential urban trees. Through long-term, methodological and creative experimentation followed by evaluation and refinement, Björn Embrén has demonstrated how we can ensure our urban trees thrive – not just survive.

Urban trees are often grow on hardened ground to enable accessibility. Björn Embrén realised that it is not a shortage of water that stunts the development of these trees, rather the roots are suffering from a lack of oxygen. Embrén’s method does not use regular soil when planting or revitalising planting beds, instead the macadam is used as a skeleton, while biochar and compost supply the moisture and nutrients. The airy subbase enables the plant beds to store storm water, which reduces the risk of flooding following torrential rain.

Not only do Björn Embrén’s tree planting innovations enrich SLU, we also benefit from his willingness to share knowledge. He is a much-appreciated lecturer and excursion guide for future landscape engineers and architects. His breakthrough with trees’ plant beds is an outstanding practical contribution to society.
