Tom Hobbs has been appointed Honorary Doctor of Forest Sciences at the Faculty of Forest Sciences at SLU.

Tom Hobbs is a senior research scientist and professor emeritus at Colorado State University (CSU). He is a leading authority on wildlife ecology and ecological modelling. Tom Hobbs was awarded his doctorate from CSU in 1979. Since then, he has worked as a wildlife ecology researcher. He began his career at the Colorado Division of Wildlife, later moving to CSU where he has been working for the past 20 years.

Tom Hobbs is driven by a genuine interest in developing ecological models to gain new insight from data collected on animal populations, and his models are widely used to support decisions in wildlife management. He is particularly interested in understanding controls on population dynamics of large mammals in Western North America and Scandinavia.

Over the past two decades, Tom Hobbs has been part of a longterm
joint collaboration with SLU, which has contributed to SLU’s positive international ecology reputation. It has also resulted in a series of high-impact scientific publications covering topics including modelling effects of harvest on lynx populations, understanding how poaching adds to natural causes of mortality of wolves, and predicting how predators affect reindeer husbandry. During his time in Uppsala, Grimsö and Umeå, he has had roles such as visiting professor, visiting research fellow, external reviewer and keynote speaker. In addition, he has taught several highly appreciated doctoral courses.
