International fieldwork stipend for your thesis

Last changed: 24 September 2024

Now there is a new stipend opportunity to carry out field work for your thesis in a low- or middle-income country. The purpose of this call is to increase the interest for, and enable experiences from, partnerships for sustainable global development among students at SLU.

Approximately twenty SLU students will during the autumn semester 2024 or spring semester 2025, have the opportunity to do field work and collect data for thesis work in a low- or middle-income country according to the list "Möjliga samarbetsländer". Before departure, all students that have been granted stipends will need to take part in a preparatory course. Next course will take place 18 October. The scholarships are funded by SLU through Erasmus+, (European Commission) or Minor Field Studies (Sida).

You may apply for one or both types of stipend with the same application.

Applications

The applications will be assessed at two points in time during the autumn semester. Hence there are two deadlines: the first is 30 September and the second is 29 November. Feedback on the applications will be given within two weeks after deadline.

Travel period

From 1 November for applications with deadline 30 September.
From 15 January for applications with deadline 29 November.

The travel is allowed until 30 April 2025 for MFS and until 31 July 2025 for Erasmus+. Length of travel should be a minimum of 60 days (eight weeks).

Amount

For Minor Field Studies (MFS): The amount is maximum 30 000 SEK. The student co-finances costs that exceeds this amount.

For Erasmus+: The amount depends on the number of days of travel and the destination, and should contribute to travel and support for accommodation. The stipend is estimated to 700 Euro per month for cost of living, and 820-1500 Euro for travel costs depending on distance to the country you are travelling to. Additional funds may be available for applicants currently receiving disability support at SLU, or students accompanied by their children.

Eligibility

for both Erasmus+ and MFS

The student

  • must have an academic supervisor at SLU and a contact person in the selected country. These must be requested and confirmed when you apply for the scholarship. The Swedish supervisor is the main supervisor and responsible for the project and the academic supervision. The contact person in the selected country of visit will help on spot but without being responsible for the academic content.
  • must carry out degree work at undergraduate or advanced level (candidate or master's level) at SLU with an examiner of the degree work at SLU.
  • is actively enrolled as a student at SLU and signed up for a degree course.
  • has a Swedish bank account.
  • has never started an education at postgraduate (PhD) level.

Additional eligibility requirements specific for MFS

The student

  • is a Swedish citizen or has a permanent residence permit (PUT) in Sweden. Students with only EU citizens' permanent right of residence (PUR) are not eligible. Students from other Nordic countries who are not Swedish citizens may be eligible if they have been registered in Sweden for at least one year at the time of SLU's decision on the allocation of stipends.
  • Has not been granted another Sida funded stipend for the field study period. If a student applies for stipends from several universities for the same field study period, that should be clearly stated in the application.
