Degree project: Can camouflage nets increase free-ranging in broiler chickens?

Last changed: 14 November 2023

Broiler chickens on organic farms must be provided with outdoor access. Research shows that chickens are more likely to use the free-range area if there are trees, bushes and/or artificial shelters that provide cover. However, the outdoor areas on several organic broiler farms in Sweden lack appropriate and sufficient protective cover.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether providing artificial shelters using camouflage nets can increase free-ranging in broiler chickens.

The study was performed on a commercial organic broiler farm during summer 2022. We are looking for a student to analyse the video recordings (i.e. count the number of chickens outdoors) in this project.
