Environmental monitoring at the Barsebäck nuclear power plant

Last changed: 20 February 2025

At the decommissioned Barsebäck nuclear power plant, we monitor the effects of the nuclear power plant's hot water discharges. The focus is on studies of fish stocks.

Our monitoring at the Barsebäck nuclear power plant

Our monitoring with fyke nets has been carried out every year in August since 1977. From 2021 onwards, we have revised our surveys. The monitoring takes place in a gradient from the area most affected by heated cooling water to unaffected reference areas.

Our monitoring also generates fishery-independent catch data for cod and eel in central Öresund, which is valuable for the fisheries management. We have data from time series that date back to the 1970s, which is unique.

The monitoring at Barsebäck also consists of a radioecological part for which the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority is responsible.

We summarize the results of our monitoring at the Barsebäck power plant annually. You can find the annual reports via SLU's publication database.
