Environmental monitoring at the Ringhals nuclear power plant

Last changed: 20 February 2025

At the Ringhals nuclear power plant, we monitor the effects of the nuclear power plant's hot water discharges. The focus is on studies of fish stocks, but we also monitor marine non-native species.

Our monitoring at the Ringhals nuclear power plant

We monitoring two areas with different impacts from the heated cooling water, as well as an unaffected reference area.

This is what we do

  • surveys with fyke nets
  • estimates of fish eggs and larvae with "bongo nets"
  • surveys with an Isaaks-Kidd fry trawl to study larger fry and adult fish
  • monitoring of non-native species
  • hydrographic measurements

The monitoring at Ringhals also consists of a radioecological part for which the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority is responsible.

Read our reports

We summarize the results of our monitoring in annual reports that are then used in the power plants' environmental reports to the county administrative boards. Every five years we conduct a more comprehensive evaluation. You can find the annual reports via SLU's publication database.
