Manual for Age Analysis of Fish

Last changed: 28 February 2025

The method manual outlines the procedures and techniques used for sampling and preparing fish age samples. It explains the definitions and interpretations of zones, as well as the methods for reading and determining age. Additionally, the manual provides instructions on how to record data and archive both samples and related materials.

The manual includes:

  • Definitions of terminology used in age determination
  • Descriptions of the equipment and procedures for each work step
  • Safety regulations
  • Information on our age databases

The method manual serves as a quick reference guide for the various steps involved in fish age determination. Since age determination requires experience, training and supervision by an experienced age reader are essential when training new personnel.
