Kräftodlingens ABC

Last changed: 16 April 2025

Interested in farming noble crayfish? Kräftodlingens ABC ("Crayfish Farming ABC") is an educational package that includes a handbook, information about noble crayfish, crayfish plague, available support and grants, as well as a film that is freely available on YouTube.

There are several good reasons to farm noble crayfish. Since the noble crayfish is critically endangered—mainly due to the illegal spread of plague-carrying signal crayfish—there is a great need for restocking material. Research shows that cautious crayfish fishing and small-scale farming benefit the noble crayfish by creating local incentives to protect waters from plague-carrying signal crayfish.

The goal of this educational package is to encourage more people to farm noble crayfish, to succeed in their efforts, and to achieve good profitability. The handbook is aimed at anyone interested in farming noble crayfish commercially, releasing them into small waters and ponds, or anyone who has noble crayfish in their waters and wants to learn more.

The educational package was developed with support from the Swedish Board of Agriculture as part of the Action Plan for the Development of Swedish Aquaculture and can be ordered from your County Administrative Board.
