Effective management of natural resources relies on a strong knowledge base. SLU Aqua provides independent, quality-assured, and evidence-based advice* to both Swedish and international authorities, organizations, and industries.

Our goal is to consistently deliver the highest quality knowledge. All our knowledge bases are grounded in both our own extensive research on aquatic ecosystems and their response to human activities, as well as research conducted by others. This is complemented by our systematic monitoring and analysis of fish, fisheries, and the environment.

In our scientific advisory processes, we prioritize assembling teams with broad and deep expertise. This approach ensures that our knowledge bases reflect the most current information and address all relevant research questions related to the subject.

Just like our research, our advisory processes adhere to high standards of scientific ethics and best practices. Our experts remain impartial and independent at all times. Additionally, our quality assurance procedures include expert reviews of the knowledge bases we provide.

To enhance transparency and traceability, most of SLU Aqua's knowledge bases are published openly in full text through the SLU publication database, SLUpub. Knowledge bases and expert opinions that cannot be published in SLUpub are carefully recorded.

Quality Review of SLU Aqua's Scientific Knowledge Base: "Fiskbarometern"

"Fiskbarometern" provides a summary of the development and status of the most commercially important fish and shellfish species in Swedish waters. It serves as a crucial knowledge base for Sweden's managing authorities.

The quality review of this knowledge base takes place during a joint departmental seminar, after which each species chapter is independently reviewed by two expert PhD reviewers. The scientific editor of the Fiskbarometern holds overall responsibility for ensuring the quality of the knowledge base.

Aqua reports and Aqua notes

The content of the department's two report series — Aqua reports and Aqua notes — undergoes review by two independent expert reviewers with the highest relevant expertise. Both the review process and the reports are always approved by the department’s editor before publication.

Memos and Other Written Expert Opinions

These types of expert support are typically brief, technical, and directed toward a specific client. While the advisory process is designed to be quick, wherever possible, the expert opinion is reviewed by at least one independent person with relevant expertise.

Referrals

We frequently provide expertise on various issues sent to SLU for referral or as part of consultations. All referrals are directed to the registrar, and the opinions provided by SLU are recorded.

Facts:

* SLU Aqua uses the terms "scientific knowledge base" and "scientific advice" interchangeably. This is because "scientific advice" has long been an established concept in the EU's (and Sweden's) decision-making processes related to the management of fish, fisheries, and the marine environment. For instance, the EU's Common Fisheries Policy stipulates that measures should be adopted based on the best available scientific advice, and the concept is similarly applied in Sweden's Strategy for the Future of Fisheries 2021-2026.
