Mercury (Hg) in water

Last changed: 05 February 2025

Analysis principle for mercury

The sample is preserved with BrCl and Hg is oxidized to Hg(II). NH2OH*HCl is added to the sample to remove any free halogens. Finally, SnCl2 is added to reduce Hg(II) to Hg(0). With the help of carrier gas (Argon), Hg(0) is brought into the system, where it is enriched and purified on two different gold traps. The detection is then performed with Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry (CVAFS).
