Biofertilizer-based production of Spirulina, a protein-rich feed resource

Last changed: 23 August 2024

The present project focuses on the possibilities of producing high quality feed through algaculture. The specific aim is to develop a growing medium based on biofertilizer for Spirulina, an edible and protein-rich photosynthetic microorganism that has been highlighted as a future feed resource. Spirulina has the potential to be produced in a low-cost cultivation system as it grows alkaline environment, which reduces the risk of contamination, and can be harvested easily. The long-term goal is to develop a Swedish production of Spirulina and thereby introduce a new protein crop.

The project is funded by Carl Trygger Foundation.
