Product quality of plants cultivated in aquaponic system
Food production must increase substantially in order to meet the demand of growing world population. Demand for healthy food produced with minimal environmental impact has also grown. Aquaculture has the potential to play an important role in sustainable food supply in urban areas. This implies, however, that the development of aquaculture is done with improved and controlled environmental performance.
The project goal was to develop healthy and environmentally friendly food through advanced applications of integrated plant and fish farming systems of the type aquaponics. Focus was on the nitrogen flow in aquaponic systems, effect of cultivation in aquaponic systems on growth and product quality
The project was funded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry.
