At the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare in Uppsala, research and teaching is conducted in several subject areas, such as the environment and health of domestic animals, feeding and management, feed science, ethology and animal welfare. The research is conducted with a focus on several animal species, primarily cattle, pigs, poultry, reindeer, fish, horses and dogs. There is also the national centre for animal welfare, SCAW, which is a center that works broadly with animal welfare issues. We are located in the Centre for Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (VHC) and are thus co-located with the faculty's two other departments. The department has several important infrastructures, including a laboratory that performs various types of analysis, a feed technology laboratory, but there are also facilities for keeping fish and aquatic model organisms. The proximity to the Swedish Livestock Research Centre at Lövsta, where it is possible to conduct both research and teaching on cattle, pigs and poultry, is important for the department's activities.
