At the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare in Skara, activities cover areas such as animal environment and health, ethology, anthrozoology, conservation biology, as well as beef and lamb meat production. Also associated with this location is SLU:s facility, SLU Götala Beef and Lamb Research Centre, which focuses on beef and lamb meat research. Skara has a long tradition of animal-related research and education, as Sweden's first veterinary education was placed here in the 18th century. In addition to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, two additional SLU faculties are represented in Skara, engaging in activities such as precision farming, advisory methodologies, and the research station at Lanna. On SLU:s campus in Skara, important collaborative partners include the development company Agroväst and the research institute RISE.

Skara is located in the country's largest agricultural county. Consequently, SLU has access to, and excellent opportunities for collaboration with, many commercial animal farms and associated enterprises such as processing industries and advisory firms. Long-term collaborations include collaboration with the Västra Götaland Region (including their agricultural school), Hushållningssällskapet Sjuhärad, Agroväst, Gård och Djurhälsan, Lantmännens Framtidsgård Viken, Skövde slaughterhouse, Skara’s lamb slaughterhouse, Falköping dairy, Gäsene dairy, and Nordens Ark.
