New raw materials for pellet production – potentials and environmental effects in a life cycle perspective

Last changed: 06 February 2019

The project 'New raw materials for pellet production – potentials and environmental effects in a life cycle perspective' started in October 2012 and ended in June 2015.

The usage of biomass fuels has increased substantially as a result of different policies, such as carbon tax on fossil fuels, electricity certificates for renewable electricity and emission trading schemes. In addition, the EU has set targets for renewable energy and reduction of greenhouse gases by 2020. The demand for pellets to supply the Swedish and European markets is increasing rapidly but the traditional raw materials are to large extent already fully utilized. Sweden has, however, a considerable potential in terms of availability of alternative raw materials.

The purpose of this project was to display the environmental profile for pellet production with alternative raw materials in Sweden and in other countries. Another purpose is to identifiy new production lines for pellets that can be expected to be successful when different sustainability criteria and certification schemes become more important on the bioenergy market.

The project was financed by The Swedish Energy Agency.

Participants from the Department was Charlotta Porsö, Per-Anders Hansson and Johan Vinterbäck.

External partner was Pelletsplattformen.
