Introduced tree species

Last changed: 28 January 2015

Pine and spruce are the most commonly used tree species in Swedish forestry, today. Other tree species can also be useful for Swedish conditions. In certain places other tree species may be even more appropriate than domestic ones due to future climate changes.

Possible coniferous tree species alternatives are lodgepole pine, hybrid larch, sitka spruce and Douglas fir. Other tree species that are interesting because of their high production can be hybrid aspen, poplar and genetically improved birch.

However, many questions still remain around introduced tree species concerning regeneration methods, silviculture, diseases & pests, production and impact on native species of flora and fauna.
