Provenance experiment. Pinus contorta.

A map showing the origins of the different provenances

The image shows the origin of the different provenances.

Purpose

Previous experience shows that the provenance of a tree has a significant impact on survival and growth. The goal of the experiment is to show the most suitable provenance of lodgepole pine for our soil and climate.

Experimental design

The experiment consists of a section for each provenance (15 in total) as well as a section for native Scots pine (1), Pinus sylvestris. There are three repetitions, making a total of 48 sections. A typical section is 18 x 24 meters with a planting pattern of 1.5 x 1.5 meters. This gives 192 seedlings per section.

Experimental history

  • June 1962 - Experiment establishment
  • July 1982 - Measurement and clearing
  • February 1999 - Measurement and thinning
  • 1962-1992 - The experimental area was protected against moose and deer with a protective fence.

Data collection

  • Height
  • Diameter at breast height
  • Registration of damage
