MS1 – Data server for storage of research data
Here are some important guidelines on how to store research data and verify computer backups at the department of Molecular Sciences.
All research data must be stored in each groups separate group folder on our common server MS1 as soon as conveniently possible. It is of course fully allowed to work on data temporary on one’s work computer but then always make sure you do so in a folder that is being backed up. We also have a shared folder for moving files between computers instead of using USB-memory sticks or external hard drives. You can always log in to the group or share folder with your AD login.
Most windows computers with a name like “SLU012213” have their Desktop and Documents folder backed up by the IT-department but we are in the prosess of changing this to our own backup system. If you have a Synology Drive Synchronization or Backup you must also routinely check that files are synchronized and Up-To-Date even here (see attached image).
- Windows computers with a name like “MSPC342”are backed up and supported by MolSci-IT and you always contact us first for help. These computers also have their Desktop and Documents folders synchronized and backed up by our Synology server and preferably have a Synology Drivefolder where you can safely store your work files.
- Mac computers with a name like “MSMAC332” or “Serial number” are also supported by MolSci-IT and you always contact us first for help. These computers should have at least one copy of TimeMachine always running and updated. We have Time Machine servers TM01and TM02 forthis at the department and preferably you should also have a second copy on an external hard drive. Some Mac computers also have their Desktop and Documents folders synchronized and backed up by our Synology server and if so you should have a Synology Drive folder in your “home” where you can safely store your work files.
- We also have aFTP fileserver for Mac users TM03in case you need to transfer big files/data sets to or from SLU
Our main server for research data is MS1 and you find login details below. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you any computer related questions and see attached files for details on how to mount drives and check backups.

Windows users please mount it as a network drive as shown in the HowTo attached to this mail:

\\MS1.molbio.slu.se\lab\biorad (folder for our ChemiDoc and GelDoc files)
\\MS1.molbio.slu.se\groups\“group name” (proteomics, anaerob, steg, plantbio, syncrothron, dairy, orgchem, metabolomics, orgkemi, nmr)
\\MS1.molbio.slu.se\groups2\“group name” (smurf, foodbiotech, HealtFerm, nanotech, structure, lipodrive)
Mac users please mount it as a network drive as shown in the HowTo attached to this mail:

LabCollector - LIMS and ELN
Here are some helpful information on how to use the electronic lab journal (ELN) that you will find among other useful addons in our LabCollector suite. Please go to the LabCollector demo page to get acquainted with and do some testing before you start the "Real Thing". Normal procedure for new members is to make a lab journal book in your own full name. You will get a login and password from your IT-administrator or group manager.
The LabCollector Knowledge Base has all the information you need to get started on your ELN and if you need help to get an account and learn the basics on how to get going in LabCollector please contact your administrator or me (nils.mikkelsen@slu.se). I would advice to use Chrome or Firefox on Mac instead of Safari and the same for Windows if you experience any trouble.
