BEYOND will train the next generation of water professionals who will deliver scientific and technological innovation across disciplines, institutions and countries needed to solve European water quality problems in an era of global change.

Aim & Purpose

The BEYOND project aims to address Europe’s pressing water quality and biodiversity challenges in a time of global change. By targeting pollution and improving the resilience of freshwater ecosystems, BEYOND will develop innovative, sustainable solutions for river water quality across Europe.

The project’s purpose is twofold:

  1. To deliver scientific and technological advancements that mitigate multiple pollutants and strengthen river ecosystems, even under extreme climate and hydrological conditions.
  2. To train and empower the next generation of water professionals with the tools, knowledge, and skills to tackle water quality issues across disciplines, institutions, and borders.

BEYOND contributes to achieving key European and global goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals, the European Green Deal, the EU Nature Restoration Law, and the Mission to Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030.

 

The Contribution of BEYOND

BEYOND brings together a diverse, multi-sectoral consortium of partners to drive research, knowledge exchange, and innovation. The team includes:

  • 20 leading European research institutions,
  • 6 water and wastewater management agencies,
  • 3 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),
  • 4 water-dependent industries
  • 1 non-governmental organization (NGO).

Together, Beyond will:

  • Develop new tools, models, and approaches to improve water quality and ecosystem health.
  • Address pollution pressures by considering the sensitivity of specific ecosystems and the varying sources, pathways, and impacts of pollutants over time and space.
  • Equip future water catchment professionals with critical technical expertise and communication skills.
  • Engage stakeholders and citizens to create long-term, collaborative solutions for Europe’s rivers and streams.

By focusing on practical, evidence-based strategies, BEYOND strives to deliver measurable improvements in river water quality, ecosystem resilience, and biodiversity across Europe’s freshwater systems.
