"I’ve always felt at home in nature, but it was really through my previous studies in human ecology and resilient entrepreneurship that I deepened my interest in environmental and nature-related issues," Andrea explains.
From Human Ecology to Forestry
Andrea stumbled upon the Forest & Landscape program while searching for educational options on SLU’s website. The program hadn’t started yet, but it felt like the perfect fit for her from the very beginning.
"I truly appreciate the interdisciplinary approach. The combination of forest production and landscape architecture is unique and offers so many career possibilities," she says.
The program has opened Andrea’s eyes to the many paths within the forestry industry. With a blend of theory and practice, she has gained a broad understanding of both the productive and aesthetic aspects of forestry and landscape design.
"My plan was never to work solely in forest production or landscape architecture. But I’ve realized there is so much in between – and that’s where I want to find my place."
An Education that Reflects Reality
Practical exercises and field trips are a central part of the education, something Andrea particularly appreciates.
"One of our first outdoor exercises involved identifying 60 different trees and bushes, including their scientific names. It was both challenging and very rewarding," she says.
Throughout her education, Andrea has learned everything from analyzing soil samples and measuring trees to designing parks and capturing the essence of a landscape on paper. The broad knowledge gives her a unique ability to view forestry and landscape planning from multiple perspectives.
Combining Passion with Education
Andrea sees her studies as an extension of her environmental commitment, but without the pressure that previous studies sometimes brought.
"When I studied photography, I quickly got tired because I felt I had to perform. But the forest doesn’t put any demands on me. I can just be and enjoy it," she says.
For Andrea, the uniqueness of Forest & Landscape is that the program combines the productive aspects of forestry with its cultural and ecological values.
The Future is Bright – and Green
Andrea doesn’t yet have a dream job, but she sees that as a strength.
"The great thing about the program is that you get to explore so many different areas. I’m sure I’ll find my dream job along the way – maybe even several!" she says.
One area she is particularly passionate about is climate change and how forestry can be adapted to mitigate its effects.
"We learn a lot about ecology and the importance of adapting forestry to nature’s conditions without disrupting the ecosystem. Our lecturers are fantastic at showing how a well-functioning ecosystem with high biodiversity is the key to a sustainable future," Andrea concludes.
With her passion for nature and an education that opens doors to both forestry and landscape planning, Andrea is an inspiration for the next generation of students – and an important part of the future of sustainable forestry.
