Tiago de Conto, a PhD candidate and graduate research assistant at the University of Maryland’s Geographical Sciences program, is making a significant impact in global forest monitoring through his work with NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission.
The Euroforester program was pivotal in Tiago’s career development, offering both an extensive international network and immersive forest management education. “The program equipped me with a robust network of professional foresters and researchers, along with comprehensive exposure to various levels of forest management,” he explains. This included everything from intensive silviculture for forest products to engaging with global climate change policies and conservation efforts.
From Thesis to Mission
Tiago’s MSc thesis, developed with the support of his mentors at Euroforester, focused on pioneering methods for forest inventory. “My thesis allowed me to hone advanced skills in future-oriented approaches to forest inventory,” he notes. This expertise not only led to the establishment of a start-up in Brazil but also paved the way for his role at the University of Maryland and the GEDI mission. “The knowledge I gained in Alnarp was crucial in opening doors to UMD and the GEDI mission,” Tiago adds.
