Integrating Sámi Knowledge and Perspectives into Nordic Rural Development and Sustainable Transitions
This keynote explores the importance of incorporating Sámi knowledge and perspectives into rural development strategies. The Sámi, as the only Indigenous people in Europe, hold ecological knowledge and sustainable land management practices embedded in the Sámi culture. Incorporating this knowledge will contribute to better designed solutions for the escalating environmental and social challenges faced in the Nordic region, such as biodiversity loss and climate change adaptation. Furthermore, aligning development with Sámi knowledge not only supports sustainable practices but is also crucial to upholding Indigenous rights, promoting social justice and cultural diversity. To be able to make use of the insights and benefits of Indigenous Knowledge, there is a need for effective integration of Sámi in strategy development and decision-making processes. This requires policy adjustments that respect Indigenous land rights and cultural practices. This keynote emphasizes the need to break with colonial structures that are still in place, defining the relations between the Sámi and the states and the approach towards the northern parts of the Nordics, the Sámi areas. To build sustainable rural communities, there is a need to renew relationships, creating platforms for Sámi leadership and fostering true partnerships. Securing Sámi insights into policy and rural strategies, is a way to create more inclusive, environmentally sound, and resilient communities.
