In landscapes with high natural values, the forest company Sveaskog combines forestry with nature conservation in so-called eco parks. In two of these parks, Albin Larsson Ekström is working on studying the presence and composition of beetles that live from dead wood.
My name is Albin Larsson Ekström, 25 years old. I am originally from Södermanland county and am now doing my master's thesis in Umeå.
My thesis is about saproxylic beetles in Sveaskog's ecoparks. Each ecopark in the study has a reference site where more conventional forestry is being carried out. The purpose of the study is to find out about the importance of ecoparks for saproxylic beetles, if they hold greater richness and abundances of saproxylic and red-listed beetles. Investigating differences in beetle community assemblages and local deadwood effects is also part of the study.
Forest-dwelling species are highly represented in Sweden's red list, many being saproxylic beetles. It is therefore of great importance to study this group. Sveaskog's ecoparks provide opportunity to study beetle communities and its habitats on both a local and landscape scale. Seeing as I'm highly interested in forest ecology this felt like a natural choice.
