Objectives
Course aims to provide basic knowledge and practical laboratory training in biochemistry, molecular cell biology, microbiology, and immunology needed for further studies in biology. The course also aims to integrate the different subjects, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, and immunology, to provide an overall understanding of systems biology.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- describe the basic structure and function of the most important biomolecules,
- explain the structure and function of DNA, RNA, and the flow of genetic information,
- describe the cell's main metabolic processes,
- use and describe certain biochemical methods and present experimental results,
- describe the structure and basic functions of different relevant cell types, such as interactions between cells and the extracellular matrix, and molecule transport within the cell and across cell membranes,
- describe principles for cell growth, differentiation, and signalling, as well as stem cells and cancer,
- compare occurrence, taxonomy, morphology, and characteristics of different types of microorganisms,
- describe the role of microorganisms in the development of diseases in animals,
- explain the impact of microorganisms, both positive and negative, on the immune system of animals.
Content
The course should provide knowledge of basic biochemical concepts and processes, such as the structure and function of the molecules of life, as well as enzymatic catalysis and kinetics, and the cell's metabolism.
The course also highlights basic cell biological structures and processes, including organelle functions, DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, regulation of gene expression, membrane structure, membrane transport, intracellular transport, cell signalling, the cytoskeleton, cell cycle dynamics and regulation, extracellular matrix, cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions, stem cells, and the development of cancer. Furthermore, the course provides fundamental knowledge of the structure and characteristics of microorganisms, as well as principles of microbial taxonomy. It gives an overview of how infections by various microorganisms occur, the immune defence mechanisms in animals, and principles of diagnostic methods, prevention, and control of microorganisms.
The course includes lectures, seminars, group exercises, and laboratory work. There are mandatory components, such as exercises, lab work, group projects, and seminars.
The course focuses on following general skills: written and oral communication, writing lab reports, analysis, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed examination. Approved participation in compulsory components.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
Some parts of the course may be held in English.Responsible department

- Essential Cell Biology Författare: Alberts et al. **ISBN:**9781324033394 Kommentar: Den senast upplagan är den 6:e, 2023 av W. W. Norton & Company, Den 5:e upplagan, 2019, ISBN: 9780393680393, går också bra.
- Biochemistry (Kompletterande, ej nödvändig) Författare: Abali et al ISBN: ISBN9781975155117 Kommentar: Mycket bra biokemibok särskilt metabolismdelen från J.B. Lippincott Williams and Wilkins Company, Philadelphia. Den senast är den 8:e upplagan men den 7:e upplagan från 2017 av Ferrier går också bra.
