The course aims to provide knowledge of basic ecological concepts, issues and practices.
After completing the course students will be able to:
Explain the basic concepts and issues relating to organisms’ adaptations to the environment.
Explain the basic concepts and issues related populations changes in time and space.
Explain the basic concepts and issues related to the structure and change over time in the communities of organisms.
Explain the basic concepts and issues related to the flows of energy and materials in the ecosystem
Make calculations of the populations growth and dynamics.
Make simple flow calculations of energy and materials in the ecosystem.
In the form of group work plan and carry out ecological field investigations and communicate the results orally and in writing.
-Identify Common Swedish invertebrate groups.
Content
Instruction consists of lectures and exercises involving organisms’ adaptations to their environment, population ecology, species interactions (eg competition and predation), communities (including food webs and species diversity), ecosystems (eg, flows of energy, carbon and nutrients), and invertebrates in fresh and brackish water.
Lectures also concerns the development of ecology as a science and its relationship to other sciences, changes in the communities of organisms and ecosystems over time, and the human role in ecological processes.
Students carry out ecological studies in the field during a field trip. The project (compulsory) is presented both in writing and orally.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written examination, passed written and oral reports, passed participation in compulsory parts.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
