Knowledge corresponding to 45 credits in veterinary nursing, of which 11 credits in animal anatomy and physiology including 3 credits in the musculoskeletal system.Objectives
The course intends to additionally prepare the student for clinical work in animal healthcare, focusing on horses, dogs, cats and exotic pets.
After completing the course, students shall be able to:
- describe commonly occurring illnesses in certain organ systems, identify associated nursing needs and formulate and review nursing care plans,
- describe basic nursing needs for the geriatric animal,
- describe treatments and preventive measures in dental care,-describe commonly used clinical pathology analytes, describe and perform basic laboratory quality assurance and describe the most common laboratory errors in clinical pathology
- describe the different diagnostic imaging methods, assess technical quality of radiographs and apply radiation protection legislation and correct patient positioning in work with radiography,
- propose and justify the choice of food, as well as describing providing nutrition to animals with special nutritional needs
- reflect on the importance of and apply communicative skills in the professional role as veterinary nurse.
Content
By means of lectures, demonstrations, compulsory exercises and seminars, as well as problem-based learning the students extend their knowledge and skills in formulating and reviewing nursing care plans. The plans are formulated and reviewed on the basis of quality-assurance and patient safety in veterinary nursing. The course covers pathogens, pathophysiology, clinical pathology and other diagnostics, as well as special nursing needs associated to disease in the following organ systems: endocrine organs, musculoskeletal apparatus and digestive organs, including exocrine glands and teeth. The course includes pathology and basic nursing needs of exotic pets and geriatric patients. Feeding sick animals, animals in rehabilitation and animals at different stages of life is addressed in the course. Dental care and oral examination of dogs and cats is taught by means of exercises and demonstrations using models and cadavers. Positioning, radiography techniques, diagnostic imaging methods, radiation protection and assessment of technical quality of radiographs are practised and studied by means of lectures, exercises and seminars. The students’ communication skills are practised in various constructed situations in animal healthcare.

Passing mark in written and oral examinations. Documented participation in compulsory sections of the course, as well as oral and written reporting of seminars.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
