Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the student opportunity to develop the student’s abilities in communication and management within veterinary nursing.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- reflect on the tasks and quality assurance of a supervisor in animal health care,
- explain theories of communication science with a focus on communication in animal health care,
- describe the prerequisites and limitations for effective communication,
- propose and justify solutions to the limitations that may arise in communication,
- plan and structure communication with pet owners and work teams,
- give an overview of and apply statutes that concern labour law and occupational safety, including regulations regarding work with animals,
- apply and reflect on the meaning of economic concepts in an animal health clinic.
Content
Subject-related content
The course covers basic theoretical perspectives and forms of communication and counselling. In the course different communication models will be discussed. The student plans an advisory intervention and practises journal writing. The student also practises their ability to critically reflect on different ways of working and the significance of communicative skills. The course includes teaching on organisational structures, basic commercial economics and supervisory functions, as well as labour law and health and safety legislation. Students practise reflecting, from a scientific viewpoint, on how procedures can be developed for quality assuring day-to-day work in animal healthcare.
Teaching formats
The course utilizes different forms of teaching to promote students' learning and discussions through, lectures, seminars, presentations, exercises and exercises.
The course focuses on the following generic competencies
Written and oral communication, group dynamics, self-development, critical thinking, information literacy and ethics.
The following components are compulsory
Seminars, exercises, presentations and elements in professional development.
Collaboration with the surrounding community takes place through practice with veterinary students and during the module professional development.

Approved written and oral examination and approved participation in compulsory components
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
