Advanced study in the main field
Second cycle, contains degree project for Master of Arts/Master of Science (120 credits)Master’s level (A2E)
Grading scale
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.
Language
EnglishPrior knowledge
240 credits within the Master's programme in Energy Systems Engineering including Independent Project in Energy Systems.Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Objectives
The aim of the degree project is to prepare the student to work as an engineer mastering a clear scientific as well as an engineering approach and methodology.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- identify and formulate technical problems
- independently plan and carry out an assignment within given time frames by employing scientific and engineering approaches and methodologies
- search, compile and use relevant literature
- demonstrate advanced knowledge in a specific sub-area within the field of the program
- present and discuss the results in a clear and correct language both orally and in writing to different target groups
- provide constructive criticism on others’ reports.
Content
Subject content
In the degree project the student should treat and present a specific assignment. The task should be relevant to the engineering programme that the student is to graduate from. The assignment should be chosen so that knowledge from earlier courses is applied in addition to its broadening and deepening by acquiring new knowledge necessary to carry out the work. The assignment should be possible to solve and present within the given time frame.
Learning activities
To achieve the goals, the student should
- independently, but under supervision, define a technical problem, study it, interpret and evaluate the results as well as present the work orally and in writing
- search, evaluate and compile information relevant to the chosen problem
- participate actively in seminars and, if possible, in other activities where the work is carried out
- comment and, in writing and orally, provide constructive criticism (in a public debate) to other students’ reports and oral presentations.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Approved oral and written presentation of the degree project (further information under Additional Information). Oral and written opposition on another degree project (normally within the same programme), or equivalent (defined by the examiner).
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
Guidelines for the degree project are available at [www.teknat.uu.se/](The written report will plagiarism reviewed, and published within SLU’s system for electronic publishing (Epsilon).
