The aim in this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of organizational theory, including knowledge of different perspectives, concepts and models that are used to describe and discuss the organization of business ventures. The course will also contribute to the development of participants’ academic competencies, including critical thinking, academic discussion in oral and written form, and the ability to collaborate in groups.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
Describe a firm’s structure, culture, leadership and strategy with concepts and models from organizational theory.
Explain organizational change processes and decision-making.
Explain organizations interaction with their environments, including their role in the sustainable use of bio-based natural resources.
Demonstrate the ability to use basic concepts and models of organizational theory.
Apply and discuss different perspectives of organization theory.
Content
The course includes lectures, guest lectures, seminars and exercises. Activities are carried out both individually and in groups.
The course provides an introduction to theories and models that explain how people organize their activities and how an organized venture is part of its surroundings. Different theoretical perspectives are introduced, using practical examples from different areas of interest such as agriculture, forestry, and sustainable development.

Attendance at compulsory guest lectures.
Approved participation in compulsory seminars.
Approved assignments.
Passed examination
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
