Biology 2, Biology BObjectives
The course gives the student basic knowledge on feeding and nutrition of horses. After the course, the student should know how to:
generally describe digestion, nutritional requirements and feed searching behaviour in horses,
generally describe the most common feeds and their production, nutritional value and use within horse management,
calculate well adapted feed rations for different horse categories,
discuss different feeding strategies and how they affect horse behaviour, health, nutrition and performance, and the general influence on sustainability and environment.
Content
The course contains general information about horse nutrition and feeding. Basic information in equine digestion and nutrition physiology is included in the course. Part of the course contains information about production, nutrient content and use of different feedstuffs for horses. Knowledge in these subjects is then discussed in feed ration calculations and feeding recommendations for horses. Different feeding strategies and how they may affect equine health, performance and welfare as well as sustainability and environment in horse management is also included in the course.
An individual project is included which provides the opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge further within specific areas of the objectives. The course contains e.g. assignments to be handed in, recorded lectures and mandatory participation in exercises, as well as a home exam.
Scientific methodology within the objectives is briefly discussed in the course.
