Organic Chemistry with energy applications
Information from the course leader
Hej KE0068-studenter
Schemauppdateringar
- Lokaler tillagda 2022-12-01
- Ändrad dag för tentaåterlämning i april
- Korrigerat tid och lokal för deltenta 2.

Basic knowledge and skills in general chemistryObjectives
The aim of this course is to give the basic concepts of organic chemistry and its applications for energy production and energy technology.
After completed course, the student shall be able to:
describe, orally and in writing, the general laws and concepts of organic chemistry, especially the ones which are of importance in energy production
account for names, formulae and properties of the most important organic compounds, as well as the typical reactions of these.
be able to briefly describe technical processes used for refining organic substances
account for some bio-based substances and chemical methods used for substituting raw materials of fossile origin
carry out experiments based on some common experimental techniques used in chemistry
analyse, report and present chemical results both in written and in oral form.
Content
The course is based on lectures, exercises, laboratory practicals as well as site visits to different industries or guest lectures. Course introduction, lab introduction, laboratory practicals as well as industry site visits or guest lectures are compulsory.
The following aspects or techniques are dealt with during lectures or lab exercises:
Occurrence, reactions, stereochemistry, physical and chemical properties of the following classes of compounds: hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives and polymers.
Chemical methods such as refinement and distillation, synthesis and derivatization and chromatography.
Examples of organic chemicals for energy storage, as fuel and as starting material for important materials are given. Exercises involving calculations on energy content and energy density as well as yields for various chemicals and chemical processes are also performed.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Written examination and written and oral presentation of compulsory exercises.
Passed written examination and completed compulsory course components
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
The prerequisites can be fulfilled by having followed the course General Chemistry and Chemical Sources of Energy - KE0049 and- having passed at least half of the course modules in KE0049
or
- having performed and passed all laboratory work and all the lab reports in KE0049

Litterature list
1: Organic Chemistry A Short / Brief Course. 13th Ed.
**Författare: **David J Hart, Christopher M Hadad, Leslie E Craine & Harold Hart
**ISBN: **978-1-111-42556-2 (US-upplagan)
