Biochemistry, continuation

Lectures, teaching sessions, computer practicals, seminars and exercises are used in the course. Some activities are conducted in small groups, while others are not.

Roll call and course introduction, seminars, computer practicals, and group exercises are compulsory components.

Written and oral presentations are carried out through presenting results from computer practicals , seminars and group exercises. The course consists of both biochemical theory and of solving biochemical problem.

The following items are treated in lectures, teaching sessions, seminars and laboratory sessions:

  • technologies for purification, analysis and structural studies of proteins

  • gene technology, bioinformatics, "omics" (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics), recombinant gene expression

  • enzymes: catalytic mechanisms, regulation of activity, allostery, efficiency, specificity, enzyme-assays

  • carbohydrate metabolism: the pentose phosphate pathway, gluconeogenesis, the glycogen, reciprocal regulation

  • metabolism of fats, lipids, amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, nitrogen metabolism

  • integration of metabolism: nutritional intake, homeostasis, hormonal control, body weight, BMI, overweight, training, starvation, alcohol

-membrane channels, pumps, signal transduction, sensory systems, receptors
