Basic mathematics and statistics for biologists
In this course, you work in the mathematics module with a particular form of equations, differential equations, which are suitable for modelling e.g. time-dependent processes. In the statistics module, some basic statistical terminology and common methods are presented. In regression analysis, you will get an introduction to statistical methodology for investigation of possible relationships between variables.
When working with data in practice, it is important to choose a proper method for a given problem, judge the result from the analysis and draw proper conclusions. In this course, you will work with questions related to data analysis in computer sessions where modern statistical software is used.

Grading scale
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.
Language
SwedishPrior knowledge
Equivalent to general requirement for higher education and Mathematics 4 from upper secondary school. Objectives
The purpose of the course is to lay foundations in statistics and mathematics with applications in natural sciences.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
-solve elementary equations, calculate derivatives and be familiar with the fondations of integration.
-summarize and illustrate data graphically.
-calculate confidence intervals and to perform hypothesis testing.
-analyse data using one-way ANOVA and simple regression analysis.
-use appropriate statistical program packages to analyse data.
Content
The lectures deal with the theory. The lessons, exercises and computer exercises deal with the practical exercises.
-Mathematics part: polynomials, powers, logarithms, derivatives and integrals.
- Statistics part:descriptive statistics, normal distribution, point estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, regression and analysis of variance.
The course is based on practical examples from various biological applications.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
-Passed exercises and pass the written and / or oral examination and approved participation in compulsory parts.
-Passed computer exercises.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
