Objectives
To introduce the concepts of forest ecological, social and economic values and provide the basic understanding that enables discussions regarding the sustainable management of forest resources. Practical course elements focus on methods and measurements to describe and assess forest stands and vegetation.
Upon completion of this course students should be able to
use basic terminology including measurements, units and measures of relevance for contemporary forestry as well as regarding the supply of forest ecosystem services in a wider context
account for the various forest values with an outlook towards international and historical conditions
discuss multiple perspectives on sustainable forest management
discuss the forestry sectors’ relation to the society at large including different stake holder claims
briefly account for forest resources and management including forest characteristics and silvicultural systems
briefly account for factors that determine wood raw material properties and utilization
use basic digital map applications and recognize the use of geographic information systems for natural resource management and environmental monitoring
gather elementary tree and forest stand data in the field, perform basic calculations and assess the reliability of the result
recognize and name a selection of introduced and indigenous Swedish tree species and briefly account for their site demands and ecology
recognize and name typical field and bottom layer plant species and briefly account for their ecology and role in forest vegetation type classification.
Content
Supervised field studies, excursions, project assignments, exercises and practical examination in the field are essential course components. Literature studies, lectures and group exercises partly based on scenario analyses provide fundamental understanding.
Literature studies, group assignments and lectures elucidate the various forest values and introduce preconditions for Swedish forestry including international perspectives, historical land use and future societal benefits. This involves multiple forest user perspectives and stake holder claims as well as international and national strategies for forest resource preservation and development. Elementary terminology, nomenclature and methods to describe forest vegetation, trees, stands and landscapes are trained throughout the course. Field studies focus on personal skills and interpretation of the forest landscape including historical land use. Critical thinking is practiced with scenario analysis. The course content builds on subject matter from the fields of forest management, silviculture, forest mensuration, botany and dendrology. Excercises and excursions are mandatory parts.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Approved written and practical exams. Approved assignments. Participation in mandatory parts.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
The syllabus is uppdated in accordance with the decisions 2021-02-11 (§§ 9-10) by the Board of Education on the main field of study Forestry science and on degree requirements (SLU.sfak.2021.3.1.1-22). It thus replaces SG0268, decided by the Programme Board for Education in Forestry (PN-S) 2020-11-11 (SLU.sfak.2020.3.1.1-447), due to changed field of study.Responsible department
