Objectives

The purpose of the course is to give the student in-depth knowledge of nursery plants (shrubs, trees and perennials) for use in gardens, landscapes and forests, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the potential for their establishment, growth and developmet in relation to the growing site (habitat knowledge). It also comprises detailed knowledge on sustainable nursery production in Sweden, including propagation, growing and handling of plant materials.

After completing the course, the student should be able to

• Know and identify a current relevant basic assortment of nursery plants and account for their origins from a botanic, systematic and geographic perspective.

• Account for important factors and processes that affect plants in different environments.

• Analyze connections between plant use, growth and development based on theories of habitat, hardiness, succession, competition, and climate change.

• Account for practical and theoretical aspects of sustainable nursery production in Sweden.

Content

Subject-related content:

The course provides an expansion in botany and specialization in nursery plants and their production and use. The main focus is on trees, shrubs and perennials for Swedish conditions for use in gardens, parks, cities, landscapes and forests. The plant material is studied from a user and production perspective that includes identification, habitat preferences and propagation. Based on theories about plant origin, habitat, evolutionary adaptation, hardiness, competition and succession, the student shall be able to select plants for different horticultural environments and purposes. There is significant emphasis on future plant use, how plants and vegetation will be affected by climate change and how these challenges will be met. The course also deals with various theoretical and practical aspects for the production of nursery plants in Sweden, including general conditions and quality demands.

Implementation:

The course uses different teaching methods to promote student learning and discussion through: lectures (both web-based and live), demonstrations (in the classroom and in the field), teacher-led exercises and field trips, and self-study.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
