Geographic information systems for environmental and natural science studies
Information from the course leader
Welcome to the all-inclusive course on Geographical Information Systems TE0017.
The aim of the course is to present geographical information system (GIS) as a tool for planning, implementing, and presenting real-world projects of geographic dimensions. Applied on vectorised as well as rasterized information, the course contains elements of cartography, geodesy, positioning techniques, database techniques, international map-base standards, and international law.
TE0017 education is internationally web-based where geographic information systems are taught via problem-based computer exercises (web courses). The course combines mandatory exercises with the possibility of adding personally profiled web courses. With teacher guidance, the web courses are chosen to cover topics that range from data capture to geographic analysis, and design of traditional as well as web-based maps. Each exercise is examined at the web, where the resulting certificate is internationally valid.
TE0017 provides the theory of GIS via optional lectures that are examined with a written test.
Please examine the TE0017 Canvas-room in order to assess our supply of web-courses, and to learn how they may be combined at different levels of examination.

- 120 credits, of which 90 credits in technique/technology and/or natural sciences- Knowledge equivalent to English 6 from Swedish upper secondary school
Objectives
The course intends to give an introduction to geographic information systems where social relevance and system integration stand in focus. Furthermore, an orientation in basic geographic analysis is included.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
Describe basic principles of GIS and geographic analysis
Apply GIS in standard software
Develop and automate GIS for user adapted needs and applications
Plan and implement GIS project in adequate application fields
Analyse and quantify geographic patterns, structures and relationship as well as
Critically search and quantify sources of error in GIS and geographic analysis.
Content
The course presents geographic information systems (GIS) as a tool for planning, implementation and presentation of projects that handle geographically related information. It provides practically applicable knowledge of how spatial information can be analysed and presented by means of maps and covers GIS in a system perspective, spatial data models, geodesy, geographic map services and products, satellite based positioning, remote sensing, cartography and map production as well as automated applications and geographic analysis.
The teaching consists of lectures, interactive case-based moments where GIS projects are analysed (attendance can be compulsory), as well as problem-oriented computer exercises. The computer exercises are carried out in the form of web-based educational modules where compulsory and elective exercises are combined so that they cover components from data acquisition to geographic analysis and design of traditional as well as web-based maps.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Examination takes place with written examination as well as presentation of completed computer exercises.
Passing the course requires
passed written examination
passed presentation of problem-based computer exercises, and
attendance at compulsory elements (stated in the timetable).
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
