The aim of the course is to give wide-ranging knowledge the Swedish energy system. The course shall also introduce the student to university studies, as well as engineering working methods and the future profession as civil engineer.
After completed course the student should be able to:
discuss society´s energy needs and available energy sources
independently and in cooperation with others identify, formulate and divide research questions and based on this search information to be able to analyse today´s and future´s energy systems, and to present the results in writing and orally
describe some current problems and methods, that civil engineers in energy systems works with
demonstrate ability to handle computers, computer systems and library databases which are used under the education as well as explaining the rules for computer use both at Uppsala University and SLU.
Content
Lectures on the concepts of energy and energy systems are treated, various energy sources and energy types as well as the energy needs of industry and society. A seminars means both lecture and run-through study assignments
Study visits to energy industries and companies
Group assignments are carried out in connection to excursions and are presented in written form
Seminars and exercises in scientific writing and oral presentation
Seminars and exercises on engineering working methods and the future profession as civil engineer
To formulate a research question and analyse a chosen part of todays or the futures energy system, and to present the results orally and in an essay
Computer introduction and introduction to library and information search
An exercise where the students analyse their energy use
Compulsory parts are study visits, seminars and computer introduction.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Approved oral and written presentations of essay, approved written group works and exercises, participation in compulsory activities, and approved written examination.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course. • Compulsory elements: At least one opportunity for a retake session must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course.Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
