Learning outcomes
The course provides knowledge and understanding of the causes of disease, their development and their overall impact on the animal.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- account for the most significant causes of disease (etiology) and development (pathogenesis) in our most common domestic animals;
- describe pathological changes for the most critical diseases on both macroscopic and microscopic levels;
- account for the organ-related and systematic effects diseases cause and in relation to clinical signs of disease;
- compile macroscopic and microscopic findings into a diagnosis;
- use the correct medical terminology in pathology.
Content
The course comprises theoretical components including lectures, case studies and independent study. Practical activities include case seminars involving microscopic assessments of pathological changes and dissection demonstrations.
Lectures and case seminars address the most important pathological changes and diseases at organ and system level. Oral presentations of case studies take place in groups (opportunity to practise this general skill). Attendance and active participation in case seminars are compulsory.
*Sustainability perspective
*The course provides basic knowledge of diseases that affect domestic animals with focus on their origins and development. This will enable students to use suitable diagnostic methods and treatments in their future careers as well as perform effective disease prevention work with the aim of creating sustainable animal husbandry with perspectives of ethics, veterinary medicine, biology and economics.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written examination and approved participation in compulsory components.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Transitional provisions
Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course. Compulsory elements: At least one opportunity for a retake session must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course.Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
Entry requirements of 4.5 credits in immunology can be fulfilled after passing the ‘basic immunology and lymphoid organs’ examination in VM0113 General Mechanisms of Disease.In addition to the entry requirements, students should obtain knowledge equivalent to that provided through the General Mechanisms of Disease course prior to the course start.
