Digital Soil Map of Sweden

Last changed: 25 October 2024

Digital Soil Map of Sweden is a publicly available (CC-BY licence) digital map product that provides information on various soil properties in the topsoil (the top 2 dm of the soil layer) of farmland. The product consists of several map layers. These are estimated soil clay, sand and silt contents in % and USDA/FAO texture class (see SoilTextureTriangle on Wikipedia).

The map has a spatial resolution of 50 m × 50 m and covers virtually all arable land in southern Sweden, up to and including Gävleborg County. Areas classified as organic soils in SGU's Quaternary Geological Map and agricultural blocks classified as wetlands in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's block database from 2013 have not been mapped, but are available as a separate map layer to mark their extent.

The digital arable land map was developed by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU). SGU and the Swedish National Space Agency funded the development work, while the Swedish Board of Agriculture and Lantmäteriet contributed data. Hushållningssällskapet also participated in the work.
