Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) Sweden

Last changed: 16 August 2024

ICOS is a European research infrastructure that monitors the exchange and turnover of carbon and greenhouse gases through long-term measurements in ecosystems, atmosphere and marine environments. The aim of ICOS is to quantify and understand the greenhouse gas balance in Europe and neighbouring regions, provide long-term time series of atmospheric concentrations and land-atmosphere exchanges of greenhouse gases, and to model future changes in global carbon turnover and greenhouse gas concentrations and fluxes.

ICOS has over 170 measuring stations in 14 European countries. In Sweden there are nine stations, one of which is located at SLU's research station in Svartberget outside Umeå.

All data generated within ICOS are openly available (under CC BY 4.0 licence, see ICOS website). Researchers are also welcome to use one or more ICOS stations for research projects, thus making use of all high-quality measurements and existing data.
