National soil type mapping of topsoil in Swedish arable land

Last changed: 27 August 2024

In 2011 and 2012, the Swedish Board of Agriculture carried out an extensive soil mapping programme of topsoil in Swedish arable land, with the aim of improving knowledge of the properties of Swedish arable soils. In total, topsoil samples from around 12,600 locations were analysed and the clay content, pH, phosphorus content and potassium content were determined. The results are stored in a database at SLU and the data is accessible via a web interface. It is also possible to extract statistics for different areas (county, municipality or main catchment area).

The results have been used, together with results from the environmental monitoring programme Soil and crop inventory, to produce maps of soil types and the nutrient status of topsoil.
