This summer, the program for National Inventory of Landscape Sweden (NILS), has been testing a new two-step inventory design for sampling of uncommon landscape features. In this lecture Sven Adler will present some of the preliminary outcomes from this field season - that has been a test season - and discuss how this new method for monitoring can develop in the future.
National Inventory of Landscape Sweden (NILS) has currently been asked by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to develop a new and cost effective sample based monitoring program that focus on uncommon landscape features that are underrepresented in other national monitoring programs (like the Swedish National Forest Inventory). This comprises two challenges:
- On one hand, the amount of sample plots visited in the field should be held low since it determines the total cost of monitoring.
- On the other hand, to detect uncommon landscape features, a very high number of sample plots need to be included in the sample.
To overcome this contradiction with the need of a very large sample size, but visiting only a low number of sample plots in the field, SLU have developed a two-step inventory design.
In this talk, Sven Adler will present some of the preliminary outcomes from this field season - that can be seen as a test season - and discuss how this monitoring can develop in the future.
